You Have Always Been Beautiful

          You Have Always Been Beautiful

I’ve heard it all…“Does my bum look big in this?”, “I never wear shorts because I don’t like my legs!”, you know the talk, whether it’s confined to your mind or verbalised, and it’s even worse when it’s said to you…”You look great for your age”…FOR MY AGE!!!!! What do you mean? I’m the best looking Susa Wynne-Hoelscher alive! Do you know of a better one?

Happiness is having the right mental attitude ie: whether the glass is half full or half empty. And I’ll add to that, having a focus that makes sense!

When it comes to your body, are you trying to be the healthiest and fittest you that you can be?
OR
Are you trying to achieve the body you had two or three decades ago?

Because if so, a lot has happened in that time! Puberty, babies, breastfeeding, surgery, injuries, perhaps even menopause…they all factor into your body’s evolution.

Your body tells your story! Every time I look at the scar on my right knee I smile as I think back to the time I had the buster on my bike while showing off to the neighbourhood boys as a youngster. My heart swells with pride as I towel dry my “mummy tummy” after the shower, thinking of the 2 beautiful girls who left those stretch marks. One of my breasts is smaller than the other where the surgeons removed the breast cancer and there’s a “dip” where the scar is, but my husband tells me “it’s winking at him!” ☺ I could go on, but I’m sure you get the gist.

For me, my focus is to be the best ME I can be. I want to be as healthy as I can be and as fit as I can be. I find ill health absolutely boring, a total waste of time not to mention expense! I’d rather spend that money on eating a balanced diet of healthy fresh organic food, it’s a much more pleasant experience. And I don’t deny myself the occasional treat. By definition treats don’t have to be unhealthy…dark chocolate and red wine can both be beneficial on the body – but I’m aware of how often and how much I consume…I apply the criteria of moderation and quality.

I also want my body to be as fit as it can be. That way as I age, and we ALL will, I won’t feel the effects. My body will still move like it’s young. Approximately two and a half hours of exercise a week is considered to be a healthy level, any more than this and you’ll experience even more benefits! I like to mix it up, to keep it interesting and to maintain my enthusiasm.

The right exercise is a real happy pill, I use it to treat my body. If your exercise classes feel like punishment for being bad then it’s probably not the right form of exercise for you. My “go to” exercise is Pilates, as it’s a proven highly effective, targeted, low impact, resistance exercise with an endless variety of options for strengthening, stretching and cardio that I can fit into my day no matter what the time. It’s also great when travelling as it’s totally portable, no equipment required. Everybody can do Pilates, anytime, anywhere.

Joseph Pilates famously said – If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. IF it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.
